A Nitrogen Injection Fire Protection System (NIFPS) is an advanced safety solution designed specifically for oil-immersed power transformers and reactors to prevent tank explosions and suppress fires. When hazardous internal fault conditions (such as arcing or pressure surges) or external fires are detected, the system automatically isolates the conservator tank and drains a portion of the top hot oil to relieve internal pressure. Immediately after, it injects pressurized nitrogen gas into the base of the transformer tank. This continuous injection stirs and cools the oil while creating an oxygen-starved blanket over the surface, rapidly extinguishing flames and preventing re-ignition.
Important Points & Key Features
Rapid Depressurization: By automatically opening an oil drain valve the moment a fault is confirmed, the system immediately relieves dangerous internal pressure, preventing the transformer tank from rupturing or exploding.
Oxygen Starvation (Inerting): The injected nitrogen displaces atmospheric oxygen inside the tank, dropping the oxygen concentration below the 2% threshold required to sustain combustion.
Active Cooling Effect: Pumping nitrogen from the bottom forces cooler oil to mix with the hot top oil, bringing the overall temperature down well below the oil’s flashpoint.
Automated Fault Detection: The system operates without human intervention, relying on a chain of electro-mechanical confirmations—such as Buchholz relays, pressure relief device (PRD) activation, and linear heat detectors—to trigger instantly during a crisis.
Dual-Hazard Protection: NIFPS is highly effective at neutralizing both internal faults (like core arcing and winding failures) and external hazards (such as bushing fires or surrounding equipment ignition).
Business Continuity: By containing the fire strictly to the source and stopping catastrophic explosions, NIFPS protects adjacent infrastructure, cuts recovery times from weeks to hours, and prevents massive financial losses in power grids and industrial plants.
